Stitch with: @wearethemurrays The spill takes 2 seconds. Your reaction is what they remember 👀 Kids feel the sting of a mistake way earlier than we think. Researchers actually study this in toddlers by handing them a toy that's rigged to break 😅 and watching what happens next. Some kids try to fix it and go get a grown-up. Others freeze, look away, and avoid. That split shows up before age 3. Psychologists call it guilt vs. shame. Guilt sounds like "I did something wrong." Shame sounds like "I'm wrong." Guilt makes kids want to own it and fix it. Shame makes them want to hide it. So a kid who feels a little bad after a spill is right on track. That's a conscience growing. We just don't want them walking away thinking they're the mess. A few things we teach in Happy, Pappy? that work at home too: 👉 Give them simple words to own mistakes: "I spilled my milk." No drama, just facts. 👉 Normalize mistakes: “Everyone makes mistakes. They help us learn." 👉 Remind them that your love is unconditional: “I still love you even when you make a mistake." They might know it, but hearing it when emotions are running high is validating. 👉 And if you DO lose it over the spill (we've all been there 🙋♀️), circle back. "I yelled about the milk. I'm sorry. Let's try again." Now you're modeling the exact skill you're teaching. Messes get cleaned up in five minutes. The story your kid tells themselves about the mess can stick around a lot longer. Comment WATCH and I'll send you "Happy's Cooking Disaster," our newest episode of Happy, Pappy? on YouTube. This show helps your child learn important emotional and behavioral concepts with the most amazing characters. Let's just say Happy has a lot of flour power and not a lot of aim 🐶. Make sure to watch so many more episodes and sing-alongs while you're there. Save this for the next spill, share it with someone raising litt
