I have two very different kids. In temperament and in their sensory profiles. One's baseline is lower and can tolerate more sensory stimuli before full-blown dysregulation, while the other has a higher baseline and can become quickly overwhelmed. If you're struggling with feeding or behavior, THIS is a must listen podcast. This week on @thepedsdoctalkpodcast I sat down with @theotbutterfly, occupational therapist Laura Petix, and author of the NEW BOOK The Sensory Code: Understanding Sensory Processing Differences to Support Your Child's Unique Needs to talk about how understanding your child's sensory code and needs can help them (and YOU) in so many parenting moments. As a pediatrician, I often hear "he's so hyper" or "she's so sensitive". But Laura offered a kinder and more useful lens. The kid bouncing off the walls may need more movement before they can focus. The kid melting down at the playground may be taking in more than their body can sort through. You don't need to change how your child is wired. When you learn their baseline, you can plan for it, like a wheelbarrow walk before homework or a quiet break halfway through the party. Comment POD and we'll send you the full episode, "The Sensory Code: What Your Child's Behavior Is Trying to Tell You with Occupational Therapist Laura Petix." We also talk about picky eating and texture sensitivities, sock and clothing battles, easy sensory activities you can do at home, and when an OT evaluation might be worth it.
