Is it safe to shower in contacts? ❌Nope! The CDC and FDA both recommend not wearing contacts lenses during any water activity. This includes showering, washing your face, swimming and hot tubbing. This is because a parasite, Acanthamoeba, lives in tap water and loves the material that soft contacts are constructed from. This woman developed a corneal ulcer from Acanthamoeba when showering with her contacts. This is a very difficult diagnosis to make (often leading to delay in diagnosis) and can require treatment for months. So, aside from not showering contacts, what else can you do to minimize your risk of developing an infection? 1️⃣ Never clean or store your contacts in tap water. 2️⃣ Do not overwear your contacts - Overwearing your contacts create a hypoxia environment which is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and parasites. 3️⃣ Properly clean your contacts if you wear weekly or monthly lenses. Don’t just put them in the case with solution.
