Parents often worry about their infants’ readiness to eat solid foods, especially if they don’t yet have teeth.🦷 However, infants DON’T NEED TEETH to begin exploring solid foods. Babies typically start showing signs of readiness for solids around 4-6 months of age. Whether you’re doing spoon feeding or starting with BLW; the signs of readiness can be somewhat different. When it comes to “chewing,” the gums are surprisingly effective at breaking down soft foods, and as your baby grows, they will develop the necessary coordination and strength in their jaws to handle more textured foods. You don’t want to delay solids until your infant gets teeth, especially molars, as some kids don’t get their first tooth until closer to 12 months of age, and molars don’t come in until much later. Infants need early exposure to solids to explore new tastes and textures and learn how to self-feed and understand their hunger and full cues.
