In other words, the tendon injury creates a “hole” through which the bone projects — resembling a button pushed through a buttonhole, hence Boutonniere deformity. This 4K 3D medical animation shows how a Boutonniere deformity develops in the finger. It occurs when the central slip of the extensor tendon is damaged, causing the middle joint (PIP) to bend downward and the end joint (DIP) to bend upward. Commonly seen after trauma or rheumatoid arthritis, this condition limits finger extension and function.
