SAVE AND SHARE because you never know when you (or someone else) will need this. "Watch for signs of respiratory distress." You've probably heard a clinician say it on your way out the door. But what does that actually look like at 2am on your couch? Signs I want every parent to know: ✔️ Working hard to breathe - skin pulling in under or between the ribs (retractions), nostrils flaring, or the head bobbing with each breath ✔️ Grunting - a little grunt every time they breathe out. That's the body trying to keep the lungs open ✔️ Color changes - a blue or gray tint around the lips, inside the mouth, or on the fingertips can mean low oxygen. Call 911 right away ✔️ Behavior changes - very sleepy, limp, or hard to wake, or restless and panicky while they work to breathe ✔️ Fast breathing - much quicker than normal for their age, even at rest ✔️ Body position - a kid who won't lie down and insists on sitting up and leaning forward is often doing it to breathe easier The grunt and the lean-forward are easy to miss because they don't look scary, but they still count. It's scary to watch your child struggle to breathe, but your calm matters. Kids take cues from our tone and body language, and your calm helps theirs. Comment TUBE and I'll send you my YouTube video where I answer the top questions people ask about cough and breathing in children. I walk through how to count a breathing rate, what's normal for each age, and real clips of different breathing patterns so you know what you're looking at. While you're there, subscribe so you don't miss new videos on child health, development, and parenting. A few might even save you a copay ! Has your child ever had trouble breathing during an illness? What did you notice first? Thank you to the families who shared clips for this reel.
