How many of these have you heard growing up? 👁 Myth: Reading in the dark will damage your eyes. Our moms told us this over and over. While reading in dim light may cause eye fatigue it does not harm your eyes. 👁 Myth: If you cross your eyes, they'll stay that way. Contrary to the old saying, eyes will not stay that way if you cross them. If your child is crossing one eye constantly, schedule an evaluation by an ophthalmologist, as it could be a symptom of some other issues. 👁 Myth: Video games use can damage the eyes. Playing video games won’t damage the eyes. However, we do know that long-term use of any screen will cause eyestrain because with prolonged screen time the eyes blink less than normal (like they do when reading or performing other close work). This makes the eyes dry, which may lead to a feeling of eyestrain or fatigue. So be sure to take frequent breaks from screen time. 🔆It’s important to note that recent studies show near-sightedness (myopia) is becoming more common among children. Research suggests that children who spend more time indoors doing near-focused activities have higher rates of myopia than those who spend more time outdoors. 🔆With that in mind, I would encourage you to set limits on the amount of near work your children do and not just on screens but also on traditional near work and make sure they spend time outdoors ideally 2hrs during daylight to help prevent the development of near sightedness. 👀Any other ones you’ve heard and would like me to address?
