🦿Hip & Knee Replacement Implants: Polyethylene (plastic) Parts . The success of your joint replacement surgery largely depends on a special plastic called Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). This remarkable material has been the gold standard in joint replacements since the 1960s, and continued innovations are making it even better. Today’s advanced crosslinked polyethylene implants (HXLPE) are engineered to be incredibly wear-resistant while maintaining the strength needed to support your daily activities, like your joint’s new shock absorber, designed to last for decades. . Studies show these modern polyethylene materials can reduce wear by up to 90% vs materials used in earlier implants. Highly-crosslinked high-molecular weight polyethylene used in modern implants is so durable that it would take about 20-30 yrs of normal use to wear down just 1mm and that’s why most modern joint replacements last for life.
