Elbow Swelling - Inside vs. Outside the Joint . Experiencing elbow swelling? Location matters! (2) relatively common types of swelling around the elbow can require different approaches: OLECRANON #BURSITIS (Outside the Joint): Appears as a soft, squishy bump on the back of the elbow - Often caused by repetitive pressure/minor trauma - Usually painless unless infected - Nicknamed “Student’s or Miner’s Elbow” - Treatment typically starts w/ REST, ICE, COMPRESSION JOINT EFFUSION (Inside the Joint): - Swelling within elbow joint itself - Often more painful + limits motion - Can result from injury, #arthritis or infection - Usually feels “tight” rather than squishy - May require more urgent medical attention . Your doctor might recommend draining the fluid when: - Infection suspected - Severe pain #elbowpain - Diagnosis isn’t clear - Movement significantly limited - Conservative treatment fails 🚩 RED FLAGS: Seek immediate medical attention if you notice: - Redness spreading beyond elbow - Fever/chills - Severe pain - Inability to move the joint - Warm, tender skin over swelling While most elbow swelling improves with conservative treatment, proper diagnosis is crucial for appropriate care. Never attempt to drain elbow swelling at home – this requires sterile technique and medical expertise! . 👇 SHARE your #SwollenElbow experience & tips .
