I really enjoyed The Surgeon General @drvivekmurthy op-ed in the The New York Times. He reminds us that raising children is crucial work filled with worry and joy and although worry and joy is part of the job of being a parent—it feels as if many parents are leaning into worry more than joy. That we need to recognize the work of raising a child is crucial to the health and well-being of all society. This change must extend to policies, programs and individual actions designed to make this vital work easier.” It resonated deeply and was part of the reason why I started my Finding Joy Series on my podcast discussing real life issues we face as parents that aren’t often talked about. To respect the hard of parenting and how we can find more joy and purpose amidst the stress. It’s why I believe so strongly in family-centered policies in our country to allow parents to find more joy and not stress about the basic needs like housing costs, childcare costs, and groceries. Progress to me would include: ➡️Improving access to quality early childhood education ➡️Improving access to families of children with disabilities including affordable therapies ➡️Providing sick days for parents to care for sick children and not have to take vacation time or unpaid days ➡️Expanding mental health programs for parents including parents postpartum ➡️Providing paid leave for parents for at least 3 months (ideally 6—one can dream!) ➡️Common-sense gun reform ➡️Housing regulation to limit foreign investors and put opportunity back to American families This loneliness and stress are prevalent and also boils down for asking for help and utilizing it, But, also respecting that some people lack a village. We had no help for 3 years while working full-time and our stress took a huge toll. Even at-home parents need help with their children from time-to-time. This is not an issue solely for work
