How many did you get right? There are actually different degrees of color blindness. The most common color deficiency is red-green color blindness and it travels exclusively in the X chromosome. This means it’s much more likely for boys to be color blind than girls. But red-green color blindness is not all an or nothing thing. There are 4 types of red-green color deficiencies: 1. Red blind (protanopia) - Can’t see red 2. Green blind (deuteranopia) - Can’t see green 3. Red weak (protanomaly) - Can see some red, blue and green are normal 4. Green week (deuteranomaly) - Can see some green; red and blue are normal Normally, our eyes can detect 3 colors: red, green and blue. You can be born with deficiencies in the ability to see any of these 3 colors. But you can also develop color blindness later in life from: -Eye injuries -Glaucoma -Macular degeneration -Neurological diseases -Toxicity from certain medications (like tiagabine and Plaquenil). If you’re worried about your ability to see your colors, your eye doctor can do more comprehensive testing in addition to the Ishihara test.
