Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🦃🍽 everyone!! No, I’m not being a Debbie Downer but what better time to talk about how we fuel our bodies than a day that’s so centered on eating!? I’m trying out an over the counter continuous glucose monitor to understand how my body responds to my nutrition choices and today was the day to switch sensors. It was easy, I had help but one can easily do this solo too. So far, it’s reinforced what I suspected already, and that’s I have a bad habit of having starchy carbs on their own sometimes and it’s just not great for me. It’s been super interesting. Knowing I’m perimenopausal and that my insulin resistance and visceral fat is going to inch up, it’s been a priority for me to really critically look at how nutrition plays a role. (I’ll add that the CGM I use is not meant for diabetics and always talk to your doctor if you have concerns.) As I’ve personally tiptoed (ahem, or ran) into perimenopause, my radar as an orthopaedic surgeon has gone up in being aware of where my women patients are in this phase because sometime we (yes the surgeon!) might be the first one who identifies that a woman is having signs of perimenopause (Frozen 🧊 shoulder, anyone??). Thanks to @drvondawright and Dr. Jocelyn Wittstein for the great paper on the musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause and giving us some nomenclature to use. What do you think about having this health tech available OTC? Don’t let joint pain hold you back from doing what you love! Schedule to see me today to find the right solution for your active lifestyle and get back to moving pain-free.
