🫀 Anatomy of Heart Sounds: Musculoskeletal Chest Wall . I’ve been told there’s actually a precise science behind listening for heart sounds. Cardiac auscultation spots - Chest Roadmap for the “Big Four” heart valve sounds: 🎯 AORTIC VALVE: Right 2nd intercostal space, right sternal border, where the ascending aorta comes closest to the chest wall, making those aortic sounds crystal clear (for most) 🎯 PULMONIC VALVE: Left 2nd intercostal space, left sternal border - Perfect for catching those pulmonary ejection sounds and subtle P2 splits (ever heard one?) 🎯 TRICUSPID VALVE: Left 4th-5th intercostal space, lower left sternal border, where right ventricular sounds are best appreciated. 🎯 MITRAL VALVE: 5th intercostal space, left midclavicular line (apex). This is your “apex beat” location - where the left ventricle comes closest to the chest wall. Remember “APE To Man”: A = Aortic (2R) P = Pulmonic (2L) E = Erb’s point (3L) T = Tricuspid (4-5L) M = Mitral (5th apex) . 🔊 My apologies to cardiologists, cardiology fellows and medical students that were stressed by the #musculoskeletal verbiage in this post. Master these landmarks, even if bound for #orthopedic surgery! #MedicalEducation #CardiacExam #HeartSounds . 👇 What MUSCULOSKELETAL Chest Wall questions do you have (defer all #cardiology questions to the pros)
