An incision is made in the skin below the clogged blood vessel, then the blood vessel is cut open to remove the clot. A specialized tool is used during a mechanical thrombectomy to either disintegrate the clot or remove it through a catheter-like suction. The Surgeon will withdraw the wire and catheter from the blood vessel and either hold pressure to seal the opening in the artery or use an arterial closure device to help seal the opening in the artery during a percutaneous thrombectomy. #s
